Lila Teunissen

Lila Teunissen’s love for animals started long before dog training was ever a career option. As a child, she brought home stray animals whenever she could, convinced that every one of them deserved safety, patience, and a chance to belong. That same heart for service followed her into adulthood, where she spent more than 23 years serving in the United States military.

Wherever Lila was stationed, she found her way to local rescues—walking dogs, helping with behavior cases, and quietly learning the language of dogs most people had given up on. But it was a close friend’s Jack Russell Terrier—an energetic little dog who could perform incredible tricks and happily run alongside mountain bikes—that truly changed everything. Watching the trust, teamwork, and freedom between them planted a goal in Lila’s heart: one day, she would become a dog trainer.

That dream became reality when Lila co-founded Bed N Biscuit Ranch in Bismarck, North Dakota. As retirement approached, she traveled to the National K-9 Learning Center in Ohio to earn her certifications in puppy training, obedience, behavior modification, and service dog development. When she returned, she launched the area’s first board-and-train programs, working not only with family pets but with rescues and owners struggling to hold onto dogs others had written off.

Over the years, Lila has trained hundreds of dogs—many of them fearful, reactive, or on the brink of losing their homes. Her greatest reward has never been titles or techniques, but the moment an owner realizes their dog can succeed. In 2021, she was honored with the Central Dakota Humane Society’s Wendell Award for her dedication to saving dogs with behavioral challenges.

Lila is a Certified Professional Trainer, member of the International Association of Canine Professionals, an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Evaluator, certified instructor for PetTech Pet CPR and 1st Aid course, and has completed Michael Ellis’s Principals of Dog Training course as well as actively seeking out continuing education courses on all dog topics and all types of dog training to provide clients with the best options for their situation.

Today, through Sit Stay Heel Dog Training, Lila continues to do what she has always done: serve. She helps dogs find clarity, confidence, and structure—and helps people rediscover joy, connection, and hope with the dogs they love.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, or simply ready for something better, Lila would be honored to help you and your dog begin that journey.
